Amos' Blog:

Dorothy Day, Angel of the Street

Dorothy Day (1897-1980) was born in Brooklyn, grew up in Chicago, spent most of her adult life in New York, then became a world citizen.

Day was devoted to the moral teachings of the Hebrew prophets and of Jesus and sought to live out those teachings in her life. Some of her favorite authors were Tolstoi, Dickens, Orwell, and Silone, and she took great strength from how these authors portrayed the poor. Day’s life might be summarized as a life of sanctity lived out on the street corners. She was called “The Angel of the Street.”

Dorothy began a Catholic Worker house in New York, welcoming the homeless, sheltering, feeding, and addressing their medical needs. Today, over 230 Catholic Worker houses and farms exist in the United States and throughout the world.

George and Margaret Fox and the Quakers

George Fox (1624-1691) was the founder of the Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as Quakers or Friends. He was married to Margaret Fell Fox (1614-1702), a fellow contemplative activist.

One of Fox’s enduring contributions to Christian contemplative tradition was his insistence throughout his life that contemplation and activism compliment one another and are an integrated whole. Another enduring contribution of Fox is the idea that the deepest kind of worship is silent. Sacred silence draws us into communion with Christ and has a profound transformative quality.

Silent meetings for worship or “waiting worship” were the nexus of all Quaker activism. Fox taught that there is a “Seed of Christ” in all of us. And that through consistent individual and collective silences, this Seed will grow, eventually transforming us into our true selves and calling us to our life’s mission.

Holy Silence: The Quaker Way by J. Brent Bill:  Quaker silence is not about stillness, as such, but rather about encountering God in a living and vital holy hush. This e-course encourages women and men to undertake a journey of spiritual silence. The destination is a quiet inner place where God teaches us directly. Friends (as Quakers are formally known) have been honing their take on silence for more than 350 years. It’s a silence that invites us to an immediate and personal encounter with God. That’s because Quakers believe that when we are silent, then the Spirit of God grants us insights, guidance, and understanding of spiritual truth.

Sometimes when we read a passage of the Bible intently and from the depths of our awareness, we can’t help digging through our own souls to find a reference point. So in this book I often reflect on the Bible in the context of my life.

Why do I tell personal stories? I’m influenced by author Frederick Buechner, who often writes that teachers must tell personal stories of of faith. Otherwise people will get the unfortunate message that faith is a two-thousand-year-old story preserved in the Bible, but not a living, contemporary reality.

Excerpt from Phileena Heuertz Foreword of my new book, “Be Still and Listen” 11-09-2018

Amos writes, “People trust God as long as they’re in control. Then, as soon as they lose control, they lose faith. This kind of faith bullies God to conform to our plans. God becomes the ultimate spotter.” This kind of faith doesn’t require trust. And this kind of faith won’t lead a person into primordial freedom. That’s why throughout these pages, Amos earnestly exhorts us to let go of control! Trust God! And then you’ll be free!

Amos knows what he’s talking about. Years of devoted centering prayer practice has helped Amos realize that freedom in Christ is not a belief or behavior system, but a radical shift of consciousness. Most of us live from a place of spiritual un-consciousness. Freedom is accessed as we become conscious.

Excerpt from Phileena Heuertz Foreword of my new book, Be Still and Listen 10-25-2018

As Amos points out in the subsequent pages, establishing presence of mind, heart, and body in God is like being anchored in our center of gravity. Our center of gravity is the awareness that in God we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28), and nothing can separate us from the love of God (Rom. 8:39). So, regardless of circumstances and surrounding chaos, we are established in the absolute, unchanging God, who has got us.

From our center, we can then respond to life in cooperation with the Divine from our true or higher self, rather than from our false or small self who has a habit of making things worse instead of better. This is what transformation looks like.

Excerpt from Phileena Heuertz Foreword of my new book, Be Still and Listen 10-19-2018

When a client meets with me for spiritual direction, we usually begin with a prayer I learned from a beloved teacher who Amos and I share, Richard Rohr. The prayer is based on Psalm 46:10. By repeating the following five consecutively diminishing sentences, the client and I are assisted in coming into Presence of Being.

Be still and know that I am God

Be still and know that I am

Be still and know

Be still

Be

Presence of mind, heart, and body is not so easy for us to experience. We live most of life ruminating or reminiscing over past events, and dreading or planning future ones. And yet, God cannot be experienced in the past or in the future, only in the present moment.

Sure, we can remember past experiences of God or anticipate future ones, but we can only be in God, right here, right now. This is what the mystics have proclaimed for centuries; that Christian faith is about living in and with our Creator. The more we can live in the present moment, the more we can encounter God and the transformation that such an encounter catalyzes.

Persistent Centering Prayer (Excerpt from my new book, Be Still and Listen) 10-08-2018

All relationships grow when given time. Give centering prayer as much time as you possibly can. Our relationship to the deepest aspects of ourselves (see Gen. 1:27)—our relationship with God, will take time. God’s love language is “quality time.” If we speak that language we will grow in intimacy with the One whom we instinctively long for more than life itself.

We may have to nix other worthwhile pursuits from our schedules, because living consciously and in harmony with self, one another, and the earth depends on it. If you do, I know you will discover that intimacy with God and the consolations of God that follow are the first things. Everything else is secondary. The Desert Elders knew this. We can know it too. The slow plodding of consistently practiced, daily silent prayer, especially in the beginning, is anything but scintillating. Yet, persistent prayer will lead to the everlasting Light!
