David, who according to Biblical tradition wrote the Psalms, was a shepherd. Moses who inspired the first five books of the Bible spent much of his life as a shepherd. Samuel, Samson, and John the Baptist were ascetics.

The great prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures, Elijah and Elisha, were reclusive and mysterious. Other prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures, such as Isaiah and Hosea, likewise seem to have had monastic, or at least deeply ascetic, leanings. The Greek Testament tells us that Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed,” sometimes prayed all night, and “fasted in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights” (see Lk. 5:16, 6:12) Most of the scribes who copied the scriptures by hand for centuries were monastic.[i]

In other words, they were all people accustomed to spending successive days and hours of solitude steeped in silence. This was their context. This is what I call the inherent mysticism of the Bible. Many of the people who wrote and inspired the Bible were steeped in silence and stillness. This is the premise of my next book, Be Still and Listen: Experience the Presence of God in Your Life.

The Jesus Paradox’s profound primal power is that it changes our frame of reference. It changes our paradigm.

As many teachers point out, the most powerful changes we can make as human beings are not changes in our attitude or in our habits. The most powerful changes we can make start with a shift in our frame of reference, a shift in our paradigm. For the Oriental Orthodox, Jesus is “one united dynamic nature: at once God and human.” This is the Jesus Paradox (Miaphisite in Greek).

We need something we can trust in an ultimate sense, somewhere to turn when our health fails, when our job falls through, when our loved one dies. The mystics affirm there’s no relationship, community, belief, or form of prayer we can completely trust. Nothing is worthy of our trust, nothing but the person of Jesus.

In The Philokalia, Gregory of Sinai (d. 1346) puts it well: “Behold your liberation, which is Jesus Christ, the redemption and salvation of souls. . . who is both God and man (human).”[1] Jesus: God’s dynamic human form—the prize of the mystics—the game changer—paradoxical, active, a moving target.[2]

Our thinking is only as large as our vocabulary. There were no English words for “non-violence” or “non-dual” until after World War II. Before then these concepts didn’t exist in English. The East has had words for “non-violence” and “non-dual” for hundreds of years. But only recently did these words appear in English.

The word Miaphysite is virtually unknown in the West. Yet, it holds the key to unlock doors in our minds, which can return depth and breadth to our theology. Interestingly, non-violence, non-dual, and Miaphysite are all connected. All these terms introduce a new mind. It’s not an either/or mind. It’s not a win/lose mind. It’s a holistic mind with untold depths, ultimately apprehended in what The Early Mystics call “blessed stillness.”[1]

When the mind is still and focused beyond any sensory distractions it plumbs the mystery of our pre-fallen state in Christ—of our Original Nature.  And for Christians that mystery has a word: Miaphysite.

Miaphysite, also known as The Jesus Paradox, changes the way we see. It takes us beyond the limitations of conventional religion into a larger world of imagination and possibilities. It takes us beyond dualistic thinking and the subtle and gross forms of violence that follow. It takes us into the light of Christ, which excludes no one, and whose parables turned either/or dualisms on their head.

Jesus may be elusive and mystifying. Jesus may be obscured by centuries of calcified interpretations. Yet he remains Christianity’s fulcrum. And at one point or another, if we take our faith seriously, we have to submit to one authority or another on the person of Jesus. What convinces me of the Monastic Authority of the Alexandrian Mystics (Alexandrian Fathers) is that they truly prayed and experienced God firsthand. They ardently watched over their souls in desert solitude. Athanasius wasn’t only an archbishop, he was also a monk. And his identity as a monk came first! This is evident from early images of Athanasius with a monk’s hood. In the third century only monks wore hoods. The unique genius of the Alexandrian archbishops from Athanasius on is they were monks and theologians first. The clerical titles and positions were secondary.

The Alexandrian Mystics not only plumbed the depths of theology. They also plumbed the depths of self knowledge through training the mind in silent prayer. Athanasius and the Alexandrian archbishops who followed him (referred to in Appendix B of Healing The Divide) were scientists of the Spirit. They conducted original firsthand experiments. They came away from these experiments radiating the power of the Spirit. This gave them the authority to lead the churches and monastic communities of their time.

Many broadminded theologians reduce Jesus to the status of another prophet. For them the Word has no longer become human, but has merely inhabited a human. Cyril of Alexandria dealt with this very same idea in the fifth century. Cyril’s response to the claim God “dwelled” in Jesus was, “If he became a worker of wonderful signs because the Word was within him, are they not simply saying that he was one of the holy prophets?”[2]

I’ve heard new age Christians say we can become like Jesus. This may be true to a degree, but no matter how blessed we are and no matter how much spiritual practice we do, people will never heal their terminal diseases by touching the hem of our garments (Luke 8:44, Matthew 14:36). The sheer power Jesus radiated is unique to the incarnation. For Christians, Jesus is the only person who could say to God “I am that.” For the rest of us, the spiritual journey is characterized by ever deepening “relationship.”

The emphasis on Jesus’ humanity and denial of Jesus’ full Divinity permeates liberal churches and obliterates Christianity’s power.[3] Author Houston Smith warns, “Liberal churches, for their part, are digging their own graves, for without a robust, emphatically theistic world-view to work within (incarnation), they have nothing to offer their members except rallying cries to be good.”[4]

People yearn for transcendence and seek it in religion. The incarnation is Christianity’s central transendent mystery. 

[1] Some recent interpreters of Christianity, such as Marcus Borg, go as far as to say that Jesus’ designation as son of God was not remarkable—that a number of Jewish healers were referred to as sons of God. This signifies that Jesus is just another Jewish mystic or another prophet like the others. But in actuality the Greek term huios theou, which applied to “sons of God” in the plural ordinary sense, was only used in reference to Jesus three times in the Gospels (Mark 1:1, 15:39, and Romans 1:4).
