DIVINE UNION 11-03-2016

Christian mystical experiences of union in prayer are referred to as Divine Union. One elementary question people may ask: who is Divine Union with? It is with Jesus.

Union is a derivation of the word communion, which for Christians is about partaking in the body Christ. Through silent prayer, intimacy and communion with Christ goes deeper. Through prayer we are united to Jesus’ Divinity and humanity. His exquisite symmetry of Divinity and humanity is mirrored in us. He becomes our all-in-all. In him, through him, and with him, everything belongs, particularly the broken places, which are transformed in his light. Jesus isn’t about fixing things gone wrong within us. Jesus is about finding us in our brokenness and calling us home. Our broken humanity and our glorious original nature unite to reflect his risen nature, broken on the cross, yet glorified. In the state of union we are transfigured by his light. Then we realize the entire cosmos bears his glorious imprint.

The Christian spiritual journey is ever deepening relationship and intimacy with Jesus. First, we get to know Jesus through the Gospels. Then we experience Jesus in the sacrament of Holy Communion. Finally, we experience Jesus in the sacrament of silence. These become our two sacraments: the sacrament of silence and the sacrament of Holy Communion: the sacrament of solitude and prayer on the one hand and participation in beloved community on the other hand.

David Frenette’s book The Path of Centering Prayer reenergized the Centering Prayer tradition with its fresh insights and teachings.  Centering Prayer Meditations: Effortless Contemplation to Deepen Your Experience of God is a wonderful companion audio program  created to be equally rewarding as a stand-alone guide – gives listeners an immersive resource to learn contemplative prayer, step by step and in the moment. With clarity and compassionate presence, Frenette explains the essential principles of this contemplative practice for both new and seasoned practitioners, and then guides us experientially through core prayers and meditations.
